The North Carolina State University community gathered at an event held on October 5 to celebrate the renaming of the Engineering Graduate Research Center as the Larry K. Monteith Engineering Research Center (MRC). Chancellor James Oblinger unveiled a bronze plaque on the plaza following the ceremony held inside the MRC.
Monteith was the university’s 11th chancellor, serving from 1989 to 1998, and was dean of the College of Engineering from 1978 to 1989. A native of Bryson City, Monteith received his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from NC State in 1960. He received his master’s degree and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Duke University in 1962 and 1965, respectively.
The MRC is a complex of two buildings that house state-of-the-art technology for research, including special clean-rooms for developing nanotechnology and some of the largest testing equipment in the nation. It was completed in 1996.
