Wolfpack (the Fall 1999 ICAR Championship Winner!) Starts Spring 2000 Season

(Story by permission of Dr. Joe David and the Wolfpack Legends team members)

After a hard-fought 2nd place finish in the first race of the fall 1999 season, the Wolfpack battled back. At Concord, the NC State team qualified on the pole and won two heat races and one feature race, finishing a close 2nd behind UNC-C. This put NC State's Wolfpack Legends team in contention for the season championship. With a strong performance at the final race on the roadcourse at Lowes Motor Speedway, the Wolfpack tied with NC A&T for the event win and took sole possession of the fall 1999 championship!

"It was a tremendous season for the Wolfpack," said faculty advisor, Joe David, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering. "This team showed a lot of courage, determination and perseverance in winning the fall championship. Teamwork was the key. Everybody worked together for the betterment of the team. Individual egos were set aside. I'm very proud of the students."

On winning the fall championship, driver and team manager Will Goodman said, "It's a tremendous feeling. All of those late nights and everyone's hard work finally paid off. The team did a great job working together, and they deserve this win. But we couldn't have done it without the support of our sponsors and without the guidance of Dr. David. Everyone involved deserves a big pat on the back!"

When asked about her involvement with the Legends team, mechanic Monika Garrell commented, "Being a part of this team has been a great experience, and winning only adds to that. Working on the car provides a rare opportunity to incorporate things we learn in the classroom to real-world situations. I look forward to being able to be a part of this group in the future."

After a much-deserved rest and Christmas break, the Wolfpack began preparing for the spring 2000 season, beginning on the roadcourse at Lowes Motor Speedway. The Wolfpack started strong with one win and two 2nd place finishes, as well as leading 24 out of 30 total laps. That puts the Wolfpack out front in the race for the Spring 2000 Championship.

The NC State Legends Racing Team would like to thank sponsors CATERPILLAR of Clayton, Wilder's Inc. of Raleigh, and Demis Wall Covering of Highpoint.
