Dr. Jerome Lavelle, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs at the College of Engineering, has been named as a member of the 2007-2008 class of the American Council on Education Fellows Program. Lavelle, who was nominated for the fellowship by NC State Provost Larry Nielsen, was part of a small group chosen from among nominations of faculty and administrators at universities across the country.
The ACE Fellows Program is designed to help prepare senior faculty members to serve as the future leaders of American colleges and universities. As a fellow, Lavelle will spend this academic year at the University of North Carolina General Administration office in Chapel Hill. While there, he will have the opportunity to work directly with Dr. Harold Martin, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at general administration. Lavelle said that he was excited about having the ability to work closely with an experienced faculty member like Martin.
“I am very blessed with the opportunity to gain a broadened perspective on higher education that this fellowship has provided,” Lavelle said. “I am especially fortunate to work with, and learn from, Dr. Martin and President Erskine Bowles as leaders committed to our university system. Many important issues such as access, affordability, and accountability have far reaching implications for higher education in general and for the UNC system, and our own NC State, in particular. This fellowship has provided me with the learning opportunity to become aware of and think about these important challenges.”
Lavelle earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Ohio University in 1984 and 1986, and his doctorate from NC State in 1992, all in industrial engineering. Prior to joining NC State, Lavelle worked with AT&T Bell Labs and the NASA Kennedy Space Center. He also served as an associate professor of industrial engineering at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas.
