Dr. Robert M. Kolbas, professor of electrical and computer engineering, has been named interim department head of electrical and computer engineering at North Carolina State University, effective July 1, 2008. Kolbas accepted a one-year appointment to the position.
A national search will be conducted for a permanent department head to fill the position by fall 2009.
Kolbas has been a member of the NC State faculty since 1985, serving as a professor and as department head for electrical and computer engineering from 1995-2000. He has published more than 140 manuscripts in refereed journals and is a fellow of the IEEE and a member of Sigma Xi and Tau Beta Phi.
“I appreciate Bob's willingness to return to the helm of the ECE department and provide us all with the benefit of his leadership and administrative skills,” said Dr. Louis A. Martin-Vega, dean of the College of Engineering.
Kolbas will replace Dr. Robert Trew, who has served as department head since January 2003. Martin-Vega praised Trew for recruiting outstanding new faculty members and “enhancing the stature of both the department and the College nationally and internationally.”
“Bob will continue as the Alton and Mildred Lancaster Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering,” Martin-Vega said, “and we look forward to his research and teaching contributions for many years to come.”
Kolbas received his B.S. in physics from Cornell University in 1975, his M.S. in physics from the University of Illinois–Urbana in 1977, and his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Illinois–Urbana in 1979.
