Hurricane Fran Takes Her Toll on NC State's Stately Trees

news photo

Alumni may remember the beautiful trees that lined the walk in front of Page Hall. Like so many grand old trees in North Carolina, those sentinels fell victim to the fury of hurricane Fran September 5-6, leaving a clear view of Page Hall from the Court of North Carolina. Post oak, blackjack oak, sourwood, golden raintree, sand hickory, white pine, hemlock, and black locust trees were ripped from the ground. Several fell through windows on the second and third floors. Many of these trees were 55 feet and taller with spreads of 45, 50, and 55 feet. Also lost were the two huge willow oaks behind Winston Hall. One of these, possibly the oldest on the Court of North Carolina, had a spread of 75 feet and was more than four feet in diameter and 65 feet high.
