Huang Named Progress Energy Distinguished Professor

Dr. Alex Q. Huang is the new Progress Energy Distinguished Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at North Carolina State University.

“This is a wonderful and well-deserved honor for an outstanding member of our faculty,” said Dr. Louis A. Martin-Vega, dean of the College of Engineering. “We are grateful to Progress Energy for their generous gift and their longstanding interest in engineering education and research at NC State.” Huang directs the university's Semiconductor Power Electronics Center, which conducts research related to energy and power. His research interests include power electronics, power systems, nanoelectronics and photonics. He was the Alcoa Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering from 2004 to 2007.

“I am very grateful for this selection and for the support Progress Energy has given to NC State and to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering,” said Huang, who joined the university in 2004. “This appointment will significantly boost the power and energy program at the university, and I look forward to making more contributions in this area.”

Huang earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in China at Zheijiang University and the University of Electronic Science and Technology, respectively. He received a Ph. D. from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom in 1992.

From 1994 to 2004, he was a professor at Virginia Tech's Center for Power Electronics System.

Progress Energy has enjoyed a powerful partnership with N.C. State University throughout the company's 100 years of service to the Carolinas.

State working for our company,” said Lloyd Yates, president and CEO of Progress Energy Carolinas. “Progress Energy is fortunate to have such a strong engineering school in our headquarters city. We rely on N.C. State's graduates to help us achieve a balanced solution to meet the growing energy needs of our customers.”
