Formal groundbreaking for Engineering Building I took place October 25 at 3:00 p.m. on Centennial Campus at NC State University. NC State Provost Stuart L. Cooper, Dean Nino A. Masnari of the College of Engineering and other dignitaries attended the ceremony.

Building I will house the Department of Chemical Engineering and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and will include classrooms, laboratories and offices. The College of Engineering plans to relocate to new facilities on the Centennial Campus within the next 10 to 15 years. Building I represents the first phase of this goal and is funded by the bond referendum passed in November 2001. Building I is also the first new engineering academic building to be constructed since Mann Hall was completed on the main campus in 1963.
