Jackson wins Goldwater Scholarship

Lauren Jackson, a junior in materials science and engineering at North Carolina State University, has won a prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for the 2008-09 academic year.

Jackson is a member of the University Honors Program and Undergraduate Research Program. She worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory last summer and is currently working with Dr. Mark Johnson, assistant professor of materials science and engineering, under a special Undergraduate Research Energy Award. One of two recipients selected from NC State for the 2008-09 year, Jackson joins thirty-three NC State students who have received the coveted Goldwater Scholarships since the program's inception.

Scholarship selections are based on academic merit and are made by the Board of Trustees of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. The foundation is a federally endowed agency established in 1986 to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. To be considered for the scholarship, mathematics, science and engineering students were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. From a field of 1,035 students, 321 received the scholarships, which cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

Ryan Going, a junior with a double major in electrical engineering and applied math, also received an honorable mention in this year's Goldwater Scholarship competition.
