Genzer receives Celanese professorship

Dr. Genzer

Dr. Jan Genzer has been named the Celanese Professor in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at North Carolina State University.

Since arriving at NC State in 1998, Genzer has gained significant attention for his work on manipulating surface properties with monolayer and macromolecular films. His current research includes materials self-assembly and directed assembly and the behavior of polymers at surfaces, interfaces and in confined geometries. He leads the Genzer Research Group at NC State.

“Dr. Genzer has done outstanding work and is a wonderful asset for the College of Engineering,” said Dr. Louis A. Martin-Vega, dean of the College of Engineering. “We are most grateful for the support Celanese has shown for the College and our tremendous faculty.”

The professorship was established by Celanese Corp. to support a professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. The Dallas-based company is one of the world's largest producers of acetyl products, which are intermediate chemicals for nearly all major industries, as well as a leading global producer of high performance engineered polymers that are used in a variety of high-value end-use applications.

Other honors for Genzer include the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, the John H. Dillon Medal of the American Physical Society, the National Science Foundation Special Creativity Award, the NC State Outstanding Teacher Award, the NC State Alumni Outstanding Research Award and others. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. Genzer received his Ph.D. in materials science and engineering 1996 from the University of Pennsylvania.
