Geek-A-Thon recognized for service and volunteerism

The NC State Geek-A-Thon has received the 2007-2008 Deborah S. Moore Service Award for the Outstanding One-Time Volunteer Event. The event was honored for its contribution to the students of Centennial Campus Middle School.

The award recognizes exemplary service and outstanding volunteerism by students and clubs. It was presented by the Center for Student Leadership, Ethics and Public Service at NC State.

The Geek-A-Thon is a weekend-long event in which NC State students and volunteers refurbish donated personal computers to give to needy families of middle-school children. The last event was held in October 2007.

Since the event's inception in 2005, more than 650 volunteers and generous donors have helped refurbish and distribute approximately 1,650 computers to less-advantaged kids and their families. The Kramden Institute, a non-profit based in Durham, founded the event.

The award is named for Deborah S. Moore, an NC State graduate who was the first volunteer coordinator of the NC State Student Center.  She made many contributions to society including volunteer work, teaching English and working with the handicapped and underprivileged.
