The UNC-NCSU Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering is hoping to give students a head start in a growing industry through a new graduate certificate in medical devices .
Graduate students on both campuses are eligible to participate in the 12-credit program. Students will work with clinicians to envision, design and attempt to patent a prototype medical device. The program also includes entrepreneurial courses that introduce the students to the market and business development concepts.
A medical device is generally defined as an object that can be used for treatment or diagnosis. Examples include familiar products such as tongue depressors and blood pressure monitors, but new technologies featuring state-of-the-art materials are quickly entering the marketplace.
Participating in the program are the colleges of Engineering, Textiles, Management and Design at NC State and the schools of Medicine, Business and Arts and Sciences at UNC.
The Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering, established in 2003, is an academic department linking the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the College of Engineering at NC State. The program, which has administrative offices on both campuses, incorporates faculty, staff and programs at the two universities to offer various undergraduate and graduate degrees.
