First Year Engineering Program wins advocacy award

The First Year Engineering Program at North Carolina State University has won a university-wide award for its work on behalf of new students.

The program will accept the Student Advocacy Award at the First Year College Convocation at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, in Stewart Theatre on NC State’s main campus.

“I would like to congratulate each and every one of you on this tremendous accomplishment,” program coordinator Brian Koehler told the program’s students, faculty and staff. “As the review committee noted, it is ‘clear that the First Year Engineering program has and continues to do great work in support of first year students.’”

The First Year Engineering Program is where all newly admitted first year students in the College of Engineering begin their NC State careers. During the first year in engineering, students are introduced to NC State opportunities and resources, attend a welcome event featuring a distinguished alum, and develop a team project for the annual Freshman Engineering Design Day. Students are expected to matriculate into an engineering degree program prior to earning 60 credits.

The First Year College, which made the award, is an academic program that offers intensive one-to-one advising, special courses and social support to freshmen uncertain about academic majors.
