A textbook co-written by Dr. Richard Felder in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at North Carolina State University has been named to the list of “Groundbreaking Chemical Engineering Books” by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. The list appeared in the August issue of Chemical Engineering Progress, the institute’s flagship publication.

The book, "Elementary Principles of Chemical Processes," is on display with other books from the list at AIChE’s national meeting currently being held in Philadelphia.

Felder and former NC State professor Ron Rousseau published the first edition of the book in 1978. The book is now in its third edition and is the introductory chemical engineering text used by about 90 percent of American universities.

Felder, the Hoechst Celanese Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering, has lobbied for more effective teaching methods in science and engineering at universities. He has published over 200 articles in the field of science and engineering education. He co-directs the National Effective Teaching Institute and regularly conducts teaching effectiveness workshops at universities around the world.

Felder received his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Princeton University in 1966. He joined the NC State faculty in 1969.
