Dr. Peter S. Fedkiw, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at North Carolina State University, has been named head of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. He replaces Dr. Peter K. Kilpatrick, who has served as department head since January 2000.

An expert in electrochemical reaction engineering, Fedkiw is known for his work in electrochemical devices for energy production and storage. His current research involves the study of composite polymer electrolytes for lithium batteries based on functionalized silica, which relates to the development of rechargeable lithium batteries for use in portable consumer electronics and electric vehicles.

Fedkiw is a member of the Electrochemical Society, American Chemical Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Materials Research Society, and Sigma Xi. He served as vice chairman and chairman for the AIChE Annual Meetings programming area in Electrochemical Fundamentals, and he represents the AIChE to the Working Party on Electrochemical Engineering of the European Federation of Chemical Engineers. An active participant in the Electrochemical Society, he was elected treasurer in 2002 and is a candidate in the 2008 Society election for vice president. He has served as a part-time Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) employee of the US Army Research Office (ARO) in Research Triangle Park, NC, from 1995 to 2008, and he was the science and technology advisor to ARO’s Advanced Energy Conversion program manager during his tenure.

Fedkiw received his B.S. degree in chemical engineering from the University of Delaware in 1974 and his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1979. He joined the NC State faculty in 1979.
