Hovercrafts, bubble machines and water fountains were on display at the McKimmon Center Nov. 25 during the ninth annual Freshman Engineering Design Day.

The event is an opportunity for NC State’s first-year engineering students to team up and test their design skills against their peers.

This year’s engineering day featured 1,357 engineering students on 400 design teams; 18 engineering majors were represented. They are a talented bunch: the average high school GPA of the freshmen is about 4.3, and 60 percent of new students were in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class.

The event is held on the last day of classes before Thanksgiving so parents can attend before taking students home for the holiday.
