Dr. Yusef Fahmy, senior lecturer in materials science and engineering at NC State University, has been named director of North Carolina State University Engineering Programs at the University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA). The director position provides administrative and instructional support for the three engineering programs on the UNCA campus: the bachelor of science in engineering (BSE), mechatronics concentration, degree; the 2+2 engineering program; and the Master of Engineering program.
The BSE degree at UNCA provides students the opportunity to earn a bachelor of science degree with a concentration in mechatronics from NC State without leaving Asheville. Basic requirement courses in mathematics and science are taught by UNCA faculty, and engineering courses are taught through the distance education program at NC State. The mechatronics degree is a combination of mechanical, electrical and computer engineering. The 2+2 engineering program allows student to complete the first two years of an engineering curriculum at UNCA, then complete the degree at NC State. The Master of Engineering program provides graduate education through the Asheville Graduate Center on the UNCA campus.
Fahmy is active in the Carolinas Central chapter of ASM International, the Materials Information Society, in which he serves on the executive committee and on the ASM National Council as a Southeastern representative. In addition to his regular courses, he has taught distance education courses in the College of Engineering 2+2 program for the past three years.
Fahmy has worked at NC State since 1996. He received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1988, his master's in materials science and engineering in 1991 and his doctorate in materials science and engineering in 1996, all from NC State.
