NCSU establishes Ergonomics Resource Center

The North Carolina State University College of Engineering along with the North Carolina Department of Labor have opened the North Carolina Ergonomics Resource Center. The college received approval to establish the center at the UNC Board of Governors meeting February 10, 1995.

Dr. Mahmoud A. Ayoub, professor of industrial engineering and cofounder of the Ergonomics Resource Center, was appointed director effective March 10. An internationally recognized ergonomics expert, Ayoub joined the NCSU faculty as an assistant professor in 1971. He is the author of numerous papers, reports and books on ergonomics.

Ergonomics, or human engineering, examines how humans interact with the things in their environment. Ergonomists determine how these interactions affect physical health and design programs to ensure safe and efficient arrangements.

The center, located at 703 Tucker St. in Raleigh, provides assessment and program services to member businesses. Professional ergonomists, occupational health nurses and physical therapists assess workplaces and design programs to remedy unhealthy environments.

The center houses laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment to test for problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome. An exhibit of unique products that tout amazing ergonomic results is available to members so they can view these products and make informed purchasing decisions.

The NC Ergonomics Resource Center is the only multidimensional center associated with a state agency in the country. When fully operational in mid-May, it will provide a full range of services, from low tech to high tech, by accessing every available resource in the state. For more information, contact the Ergonomics Resource Center at (919) 515-2052.
