The Department of Computer Science at NC State University announces the addition of four new corporate partners to its expanding ePartners Program during the first quarter of 2002. The corporations are JHP Consulting, Telesyn and Computer Service Partners (CSP) as ePartners and Progress Energy as a Super ePartner.

Launched in fall 2000, the ePartners Program provides a formal and structured framework for fostering collaboration between the global business community and NC State’s Department of Computer Science. The program, which recognizes its corporate sponsors with an extensive portfolio of benefits, has grown steadily since its inception and now totals more than 30 companies at the Corporate Friends, ePartners and Super ePartners levels.

Kenneth M. Tate, director of the ePartners Program, said the program has been a “win-win” for the university and corporate partners. He explained, “Our ePartners Program not only provides unrestricted funding to help the department deliver the highest quality educational experience possible for our students, but it also serves as a means for building strong and collaborative relationships with the corporate community. Because the benefits can be structured to meet a company’s unique and specific needs, no two experiences are the same. Some of our partners are very interested in research and project sponsorship, while others are more focused on talent development and acquisition.” Regardless of the motivating factor, all ePartners enjoy a special bond with the department and NC State University, awarding them unique communications, networking and engagement opportunities.

Dr. Alan L. Tharp, head of the Department of Computer Science, stressed the broad positive impact such corporate partnerships have on the overall educational experience by saying, “The extent of our ePartners’ impact goes beyond funding. Perhaps the most valuable outcome of these relationships has been the engagement and dialogue between faculty and corporate executives resulting in ongoing enhancements to our research, curriculum development and evolution of our strategic goals.” Tharp concluded, “We are extremely appreciative of the generosity, support and collaboration we have with our ePartners, as strong and active partnerships between the university and members of the global business community are core to our mutual success. We welcome Progress Energy, Telesyn, CSP and JHP Consulting as new ePartners.”

About NC State’s Department of Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University was established in 1967 and is among the nation’s largest and fastest-growing computer science departments. The department’s student enrollment has grown 83 percent since 1996 and now includes approximately 1,085 undergraduates and 325 graduate students. More than 14,000 students take courses provided by the Department of Computer Science at NC State annually. Twenty tenure-track computer science faculty have joined the department over the past eight years, possibly the largest influx of new tenure-track talent for any computer science department in the United States during this period. Eleven of these faculty members have received the prestigious National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (Career) Award for outstanding young faculty in the U.S. Faculty and staff now occupy space in nine different buildings spread across multiple campuses, but plans are being finalized that will consolidate the department in a new $41 million facility on Centennial Campus by 2005. The department continues to strengthen its curriculum, having recently completed a comprehensive curriculum update by adding courses in artificial intelligence, human-computer interface design, data and computer communications networks, multimedia technologies, ecommerce technologies, XML, network security, gaming and data warehousing.
