The College of Engineering at North Carolina State University has joined forces with Craven Community College to offer a bachelor of science in engineering degree to residents in the Havelock area.
The new degree offering was approved by the UNC Board of Governors on Wednesday, March 7 and will be available to students for fall 2007 enrollment.
Through the new program, the engineering courses for the undergraduate degree program will be delivered from NC State through the Engineering Online program, an Internet-based distance education program designed to offer engineering undergraduate and graduate courses to working professionals.
Students will take general education coursework from Craven Community College.
“This new degree offering will allow military personnel as well as coastal residents to earn an undergraduate engineering degree,” says Dr. Richard Keltie, associate dean for academic programs in the College of Engineering. “Having an educated work force available can draw industry to the area, providing jobs and improving the economy.”
The new degree offering at Craven’s Havelock campus joins an existing program at the University of North Carolina at Asheville as NC State’s only two undergraduate engineering degree programs available completely via distance education.
The program also builds on Craven’s existing 2+2 engineering partnership program with NC State, which has allowed students to take their first two years of coursework at Craven and then transfer to Raleigh to complete their engineering degrees.
“Students now will be able to earn a bachelor’s degree in engineering from NC State here in Craven County,” said Scott Ralls, president of Craven Community College. “We’re very excited that the partnership with NC State will provide such outstanding opportunities for our students and our community. Engineering careers are vital to our national economy, but they are particularly vital to our local economy.
“This partnership also is important to our college’s continued support of Fleet Readiness Center East at Cherry Point, and we thank Dennis West there for efforts to make this possible.”
The Engineering Online program at NC State, which consistently ranks among the best values in the delivery of distance education, collaborates with nine community colleges and universities to offer undergraduate engineering courses to approximately 300 students each semester across the state.
