The College of Engineering's Class of 2012 just arrived on campus, but it's already earned a reputation as one of the strongest in the College's history.
The students' arrival came after the College received about 4,500 applications last year, a record. Enrollment officials say the numbers have allowed the College to be more selective when accepting applicants, creating one of the strongest classes ever.
The average high school GPA of the new freshmen is about 4.3. Almost 60 percent of new students were in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class.
College administrators credit the College's position in national and international rankings for some of the growth in applicants. The College ranked 28 th among undergraduate programs in the most recent rankings published by U.S. News & World Report . In addition, NC State was 25 th for engineering/technology and computer science in worldwide rankings published in the Academic Ranking of World Universities .
"Our goal is to make the College of Engineering at NC State a top choice for the brightest students in the state and the world," said Kay Leager, director of enrollment management. "Our increased rankings among engineering schools are definitely helping our recruiting efforts. The secret is out!"
