The College of Engineering at North Carolina State University announced the Faculty Senior Scholarship Award for 2007-08 at the annual fall faculty meeting held September 6, 2007. Dr. Russell E. King, professor of industrial and systems engineering and chair of the College Scholarship Committee, presented the award to Paul R. Carruth.

Carruth is an exceptional student majoring in textile engineering. He is the recipient of the College of Textiles Murata of America Merit Scholar award, the Leader of the Pack Scholarship, and the Sigma Phi Epsilon Balance Man Scholarship. He has been inducted into several honor societies, including Phi Kappa Phi, the Delta Delta Sigma Dental Honor Fraternity and the Sigma Tau Sigma Textile Honor Fraternity.

A multitalented individual, Paul participates in a number of on- and off-campus activities. He is president of the NC State Pre-Health Club, has served as an officer of the Tompkins Textile Student Council, is a member of the Campus Crusade for Christ, participates in intramural sports and builds websites as a part-time job.

An avid musician, Paul plays the piano, hammered dulcimer, drums and guitar for the College Ministry’s worship team at Providence Baptist Church in Raleigh. He also founded an after school program called Sight-N-Sound where NC State students play and sing songs with students at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind.

Paul has traveled extensively, and through the NC State Study Abroad program, spent one summer studying at the University of Oxford in England and another at the Lorenzo de’Medici School in Italy.

Intending to pursue a career in dentistry, he has combined his career and philanthropic interests by assisting practicing dentists in free dental clinics throughout North Carolina. In 2006 he traveled to underprivileged areas of Mexico and Honduras on dental outreach trips.
