One is a super-absorbent floor mat that can contain dangerous fluids spilled in operating rooms. Another is a voice-activated tool that allows ailing hospital patients to summon a nurse. Another is a pool apparatus that allows aquatic therapy patients to be suspended in water while conducting their exercises.
These important innovations were created by NC State seniors in Biomedical Engineering. Those students, along with others from UNC-Chapel Hill, will present their senior design projects during the NC State-UNC Biomedical Engineering Research+Design Symposium from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, at the N.C. Biotechnology Center in Research Triangle Park. Media coverage is invited.
The symposium gives students the chance to showcase their projects in front of an audience of both industry professionals and academic representatives. Ten student teams from NC State, along with seven teams from UNC and seven joint graduate students are scheduled to present at the event.
The projects cover a range of medical devices related to rehabilitation, biological process, medical textiles, imaging, medical device engineering, and more. Students worked in teams of three to five while completing the projects.
Senior design is a two-semester course that is intended to help prepare students for the workplace or graduate school. Students taking the course use a design control process based on the Food and Drug Administration’s quality system regulations to help their teams identify needs and develop and test products. The goal is to build engineering knowledge while accomplishing "real world" engineering design projects.
The Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is an academic department co-located at NC State University and UNC-Chapel Hill. It was established on December 1, 2003, linking the College of Engineering at NC State to the School of Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill.
