On May 30, 2003, the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina system approved the establishment of joint master of science and doctor of philosophy degree programs in biomedical engineering at North Carolina State University and UNC-Chapel Hill. The new joint degree programs are proposed to begin in August 2003.
NC State has an engineering school and a bachelor of science degree in biomedical engineering. UNC-Chapel Hill has a medical school and a graduate program in biomedical engineering. Combining the strengths of the two institutions will provide richer academic and research opportunities for students. The new degrees will be jointly administrated and conferred by the two universities.
Biomedical engineering is projected to have considerable growth in employment in the next decade, particularly in North Carolina.
