Dr. Yousry Y. Azmy has been named head of the Department of Nuclear Engineering at North Carolina State University, effective June 1, 2008. He replaces Dr. Mohamed Bourham, who has served as interim department head since July 1, 2006.

Azmy comes to NC State from The Pennsylvania State University where he has served as professor of nuclear engineering since July 2002. Prior to this he held several positions in the Computational Physics and Engineering Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, from 1986 through 2002.

An expert in methods and applications in nuclear computational science, Azmy has led development efforts for the Discrete Ordinates of Oak Ridge System (DOORS) code package since 1995 and continues to play a pivotal role in this regard. His research is focused on nuclear computational science issues with particular applications in neutron transport and diffusion methods and analysis; acceleration methods for transport methods; multiprocessing algorithm development, implementation, analysis, and parallel performance modeling; development and analysis of numerical methods for fluid flow; and numerical analysis of nonlinear dynamics phenomena with application to stability and bifurcation analyses.

A fellow of the American Nuclear Society, Azmy earned his PhD and MS degrees in nuclear engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in 1985 and 1983, respectively. He received a B.Sc. in nuclear engineering from the University of Alexandria, Egypt, in 1978.
