Two North Carolina State University faculty members and a doctoral student have been honored at American Nuclear Society (ANS) events.
Dr. Paul J. Turinsky, professor of nuclear engineering, received the ANS Presidential Citation in Atlanta in June. He was honored for his five years of service as commissioner on the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, Inc. Turinsky received his M.S.E. and Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the University of Michigan in 1967 and 1970, respectively.
At the same event, Dr. Robin P. Gardner, professor of nuclear and chemical engineering, received the 2009 Arthur Holly Compton Award that recognizes and encourages outstanding contributions to education in nuclear science and engineering. Gardner is also the director of the Center for Engineering Applications of Radioisotopes and is an Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor. He received his Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University in 1961.
In April, Ross Hays, a nuclear engineering doctoral student, won the 2009 student best paper award at the Advances in Nuclear Fuel Management IV meeting in Hilton Head, SC. His paper was entitled “BWR In-core Fuel Management Optimization using Parallel Simulated Annealing in FORMOSA-B”. Turinsky is his adviser.
