Engineering Program Offers Undergraduates Research Experience

Thirteen undergraduates from ten colleges and universities across the country came to the Center for Advanced Electronic Materials Processing (AEMP) at North Carolina State University during the summer to participate in the fifth annual Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program.

The program, designed to give students first-hand research experience, is held in cooperation with an AEMP outreach program at North Carolina A&T State University. Beginning May 20, students spent four weeks at NC A&T. They conducted research at NC State until Aug. 6. Funding, which included a student stipend, was provided primarily by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

This year, under the direction of research coordinators Dr. Dennis Maher, of the NC State materials science and engineering department, and Dr. Richard Kuehn, of the electrical and computer engineering department, students designed and built solar cells.

Penny LeBourgeois, assistant director of AEMP and the developer of the NC State program, said that unlike most REU programs, the AEMP program uses a team approach to teach students the scientific methodology, workplace cooperation and communication skills researchers need.

AEMP, part of the College of Engineering at NC State and other institutions and an NSF Engineering Research Center, pursues research in the area of high-quality, reliable, single-wafer processing.
