Strenkowski Named Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs

Dr. John S. Strenkowski, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and assistant dean for research in the College of Engineering at NC State University, has been named associate dean for research and graduate programs in the college, effective November 1. Strenkowski succeeds Dr. Sarah A. Rajala, who has been named head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Mississippi State University.

For six years Strenkowski has served as assistant dean for research. He joined the NC State faculty in 1978. From 1995 to 1997 he served as associate department head of mechanical and aerospace engineering.

His areas of expertise include finite element analysis, nonlinear stress analysis, structural dynamics, computer-aided design and optimization of manufacturing processes. During his career at NC State he has been the principal investigator or coprincipal investigator on over $10 million in external funding from a number of federal and state sources.

He is a member of the American Society for Engineering Education, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Society of Precision Engineering, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the North American Manufacturing Research Institution. For outstanding achievements in education and research, he was accorded the 1989 SAE Ralph R. Teetor Award and the 1998 ASME Blackall Machine Gage and Tool Award.

Strenkowski received his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the University of Virginia in 1977.
