The Center for Embedded Systems Research (CESR) at North Carolina State University has announced that Red Hat has joined the center to collaborate on research projects. The center researches designs for embedded computer systems that drive everything from automobile keyless entry devices to washing machines and dryers.
“Red Hat is a logical partner for the center,” said Dr. Thomas M. Conte, professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of the CESR. “The goal of the center is to reach out to increase relationships with industry leaders to enhance the teaching and research that we conduct. This partnership will provide opportunities for our students and faculty to interact with an industry leader.”
Established in September 2003, the CESR has already garnered attention from other industry leaders as well, including Ericsson, Renesas and Qualcomm. Conte believes that interaction and cooperation with Red Hat is essential, given that the company’s operating system, Linux, is now being used in embedded systems.
“We are researching design,” said Conte, “and you can’t do cutting-edge design research on embedded systems without partnering with industry.”
As part of the agreement with Red Hat, Dr. William Cohen, a top embedded systems researcher with Red Hat, will spend several days each week at the center conducting research and working with students and CESR faculty.
“NC State is well-ranked and well-respected in the area of computer engineering,” said Leigh Day, a spokeswoman for Red Hat. “The CESR also houses and nurtures a team of very talented engineers and students. The relationship between Red Hat and the center will be ‘hands on’ with Red Hat engineers spending time at the CESR facility. Together we will work to improve software through research collaboration. This will be an exciting and fulfilling endeavor for NC State, Red Hat and the technology community at large.”
