Faculty, staff and students at the Institute for Maintenance Science and Technology (IMST) at North Carolina State University received Pride of Boeing appreciation awards from Boeing Commercial Aviation in a ceremony at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering on December 5.
Receiving the awards for their work on carbon fibers recycling were Dr. Jerome J. Cuomo, Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) and director of IMST; Dr. Roger C. Sanwald, senior researcher at IMST; Brian E. Allen, MSE graduate student; Myles L. Conner, MSE graduate student; Joseph P. Heil, junior in textile engineering; Amy G. Herman, senior contract negotiator in research administration; and Sarah P. Daniell, administrative support specialist at IMST.
After a global search, Boeing Commercial Aviation in Seattle selected Cuomo’s group to collaborate with them on the recycling project because of their responsiveness and excellent data on the properties of recovered fiber. With administrative support from Herman and Daniell, the IMST research team has been working on this project since October 2005.
Joining the awards ceremony by way of a conference call, Boeing’s Peter George congratulated Cuomo and the other award winners. “Your team,” said George, “has done an excellent job. We are planning on a continued relationship with NC State and continued excellent work on this project.”
“It has been a wonderful collaboration,” Cuomo agreed.
