The inaugural David F. Ollis Lecture in Biochemical Engineering will be held Monday, October 15, at 10:45 a.m. in Room 1011 Engineering Building I on North Carolina State University’s Centennial Campus. Dr. Wei-Shou Hu, Distinguished McKnight University Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota, will speak on “Reaction Engineering Classics in Systems Biotechnology.” The lecture is free and open to the public.
Known for his work in cell culture technology, tissue engineering and metabolic engineering, Hu is the co-editor, with Dr. Sadettin S. Ozturk, of Cell Culture Technology for Pharmaceutical and Cell-Based Therapies, published in 2006. His work emphasizes the application of engineering analysis to biochemical and cellular systems and the incorporation of physiological insight into the quantitative modeling of biological systems such as mammalian cells, differentiated tissue cells and microorganisms. Current research efforts emphasize employing genomic and proteomic tools in those research projects and exploring system reduction and noble modeling approaches for quantitative description of cellular processes.
Sponsored by the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and the Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) at NC State, the David F. Ollis Lecture Series celebrates the pioneering contributions of Dr. David Ollis, Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at NC State, to the field of biochemical engineering.
Ollis and his colleague, Dr. James E. Bailey, wrote the first textbook in the field of biochemical engineering, Biochemical Engineering Fundamentals, published in 1977 and revised in 1986. Known for his work in biochemical engineering, catalysis and photocatalysis, and engineering education, Ollis has published books in all these areas, including Liberal Education for 21st Century Engineering, which was co-edited with Kathryn Neeley and Heinz Luegenbiehl and published in 2004. He joined the NC State faculty in 1985.
