The College of Engineering auto racing team participated in a National Collegiate Association for Racing (NCAR) demonstration race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on July 26, along with four other NCAR teams from Duke, UNC-Charlotte, University of South Carolina and University of Tennessee.
Each school has two drivers who compete in heats on the quarter-mile track at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. NC State's team drivers are Cliff Hamilton and Sonia Haanskorf, both juniors in mechanical engineering. Dr. Joseph David, associate professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, is the adviser for the 10-member NC State racing team.
The NCAR demonstration race on Saturday was the first exhibition race of the Legends cars supplied to the colleges by 600 Racing Inc. of Charlotte. NCAR is an affiliation of engineering colleges pioneering the sport of intercollegiate auto racing. It is planned as a self-supporting revenue sport that will enhance engineering educational programs at member institutions.
