List Named Head of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at NC State University

Dr. George F. List has been named head of the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at North Carolina State University, effective July 1, 2005. He replaces Dr. E. Downey Brill Jr., who has served as head of the department since 1988.

List is currently chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. He also serves as director of the Center for Infrastructure and Transportation Studies and is a professor in the Department of Decision Sciences and Engineering Systems. His professional experience includes work in the private sector as a senior transportation engineer with Transportation and Distribution Associates in Philadelphia, Pa., and in the military as an instructor and department head at the Nuclear Power School in Bainbridge, Md.

A specialist in instrumentation and control for large-scale networks, List is the recipient of the ITS-NY 2003 Project of the Year Award, the US Department of Energy 1999 Defense Programs Award of Excellence and Rensselaer’s Darrin Counseling Award. He was also a Finalist for the INFORMS Edelman Prize. He currently serves as chairman of the User Stakeholders Group for the Federal Highway Administration’s Next Generation Simulation Model project.

List is a member of the Transportation Research Board, the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Transportation Engineers and the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

List received his Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1984.
