Dr. Peter K. Kilpatrick, professor and head of the chemical engineering department at North Carolina State University, has been appointed director of the Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC), effective May 1. He will continue as department head at least through 2004.
The Golden LEAF (Long-term Economic Advancement Foundation) is providing $33.5 million to design, build and equip the BTEC, which is currently under construction on Centennial Campus. According to Kilpatrick, the Center will bring together faculty from the College of Engineering and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to research and teach methods of biotechnology implementation in manufacturing.
Students from throughout the state's universities and community colleges could come to the center for a variety of one-week to one-month training programs and educational modules or for seminars as part of their science degrees. Workers in more remote parts of the state could receive extra training there through community college programs and distance education programs delivered from BTEC. The proposed 91,000-square-foot BTEC is slated for completion by 2007.
Kilpatrick received his doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1983 and joined the faculty at NC State that same year. His primary areas of interest include surfactant and interfacial science, fluid microstructures, colloidal aggregates, phase equilibria, biosensors, self-assembly of biological systems and bioseparations.
