On December 7, Dr. Jack Carpenter, technical director at Argonne National Laboratory’s Intense Pulsed Neutron Source, will be the 2006 Nuclear Engineering Technical Lecturer at North Carolina State University. Carpenter is known for his groundbreaking work in the development of neutron sources and instrumentation. He and colleagues built and operated the first-ever pulsed spallation neutron sources equipped for neutron scattering.
The title of Carpenter’s talk is “From the Cosmos to the Nucleus: The Early History of the Spallation Reaction.” His presentation will trace the early knowledge of the neutron producing spallation reaction and cite examples of its application and important milestones leading up to its use in modern neutron facilities.
Carpenter obtained his B.S. in Engineering Science from Pennsylvania State and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Michigan. He served as Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the University of Michigan from 1964 until 1975 before moving to Argonne National Laboratory in 1975.
He is a fellow of the American Nuclear Society and the Neutron Scattering Society of America, a distinguished fellow of Argonne National Laboratory and the 2006 recipient of the Clifford G. Shull Prize from the Neutron Scattering Society of America.
Washington Group International is the sponsor of the 2006-07 distinguished technical lecture.
