The College of Engineering at North Carolina State University has recognized Brian Carty of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Sheila Hayes and Dr. Hubert Winston of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering as the winners of the 2009 Awards for Excellence.
The awards were announced at a ceremony held March 13 in Burlington Nuclear Engineering Laboratories. Dr. Louis A. Martin-Vega, dean of the College of Engineering, presented plaques and $250 gift checks to Carty and Hayes. Dr. Peter Fedkiw, head of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, accepted a plaque and gift check on behalf of Winston.
The winners also received eight hours of paid time off and are now nominees for the NC State University Award for Excellence.
Also nominated for the College awards were Brenda Asbury of Research Administration; Saida Fatmi of the Industrial Extension Service; Michael Reep of the Industrial Extension Service; Lara Shields of the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering; Martin Baucom of the Engineering Foundation; and Tim McGlothin of the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering.
Brian Carty, desktop support administrator for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is responsible for day-to-day network support for more than 500 graduate students and 125 faculty and staff. He is not only technologically savvy, but has also proven to be a valuable teacher, constantly helping users with applications, complex instructions, and keeping their computers secure.
Brian has won the Pride of the Wolfpack award twice for his outstanding customer service. He was recognized for his devotion to his customers and ability to support one of the largest departments on campus that spreads throughout five different buildings. The number of clients he has supported and projects he has led has grown steadily.
Brian is known for being exceedingly efficient, prompt, and courteous. He frequently works late nights and weekends and helps the department keep running smoothly.
Sheila Hayes has logged many accomplishments as the environmental health and safety technician for Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. She has established new safety guidelines that other departments around campus have since adopted. These guidelines include assigning lab managers to each lab, organizing impromptu lab inspections, and ensuring that employees update their safety training and safety plans.
Sheila also serves as the building liaison and was instrumental in the department move from Riddick Hall to Engineering Building I on Centennial Campus. She attended meetings with architects, construction workers, deans, and faculty members, organized the moving of offices and labs, notified workers of installation defects, and was on call around the clock.
Sheila has received the Wolfpack Award, the Golden Wrench Award, and the Rosemary Robinson Award. She also helps out in the community by volunteering with children who are underprivileged and developmentally challenged.
Dr. Hubert Winston, executive assistant to the department head of chemical and biomolecular engineering and executive assistant to the director of the Golden LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center, has served in the CBE department as a faculty and staff member for more than 35 years. Hubert is an outstanding professional and great colleague of all faculty and staff in the department.
Hubert has achieved much in web-based design and developing computer-based means of information delivery. His multiple duties and accomplishments include planning and managing the well-received 82nd ACS Colloids and Surface Science Symposium, updating the graduate recruiting brochure and serving as the CBE webmaster. He also assisted with the effort to gain approval for an NC State/Campbell University dual degree program.
Hubert has also assisted with a variety of minor projects including assisting with planning the CBE faculty retreat, assisting with awards dinners, and assisting with award nomination packages.
