Researchers at NC State have been awarded an IBM Shared University Research (SUR) grant. The grant is presented to institutions with high-quality research and education programs and provides for the purchase of IBM equipment in support of specific projects. Dr. Mladen A. Vouk, professor of computer science and technical director of the Center for Advanced Computing and Communications at NC State, was instrumental in helping NC State receive the grant. The specific value of the grant will depend on the choice of IBM equipment.
According to Vouk, “This year the grant equipment is aimed at supporting NC State efforts in the arena of e-education, NC BioGrid and computationally oriented research in life sciences in general, advanced research in the areas of Web services and associated databases and assessment of the impact of mobile computing on teaching.”
More than just an equipment grant, an SUR grant supports collaboration between university faculty and IBM researchers in addition to improving recruitment of university graduates to IBM. “NC State is the number one source of student recruits to the entire IBM corporation,” said Vouk.
