Civil Engineering Alumna Establishes $50,000 Leadership Endowment

Mulkey

Barbara H. Mulkey, one of the first women to earn a civil engineering degree from North Carolina State University and President/CEO of Mulkey Engineers and Consultants, has committed $50,000 in honor of retired General Hugh Shelton.

Half of the gift will endow the Mulkey/General Hugh Shelton Leadership Award recognizing a rising senior in the College of Engineering who has demonstrated values-based leadership as exemplified by personal integrity, sense of responsibility and commitment of service.

The other half will support the General Hugh Shelton Initiative for Leadership Development at NC State University. Retired General H. Hugh Shelton, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, serves as the Initiative's Executive Director and Senior Leadership Fellow. In this role, General Shelton hosts an annual leadership forum and leads program efforts in values-based leadership for pre-collegiate youths, NC State students, ROTC enrollees, faculty and staff, executive and community leaders and for other diverse audiences served by the University's Extension and Engagement endeavors.

Dean Nino A. Masnari said of the gift, "This commitment by Barbara Mulkey is an investment in tomorrow's leaders in civil engineering and beyond. Her gift will support the educational activities of some of the brightest and most energetic young people at NC State."
