Progress Energy has awarded a grant of $351,000 to North Carolina State University. In a ceremony at Progress Energy offices July 29, Robert B. McGehee, chairman and CEO of Progress Energy, presented a check to Chancellor James L. Oblinger. A large portion of the gift, $252,500, will go to the College of Engineering. The remainder will go to the colleges of Management, Natural Resources and Physical and Mathematical Sciences.
Progress Energy has been a long-standing supporter of NC State and the College of Engineering. This year the grant will support programs in civil engineering, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering and nuclear engineering. In addition, the grant will fund collegewide programs, including Benjamin Franklin Program scholarships, diversity scholarships and the renovation of a combined classroom and laboratory in Daniels Hall.
Dean Nino A. Masnari said, “We greatly appreciate the long and generous support of Progress Energy to the College of Engineering. This funding will enhance our programs and create new opportunities for faculty and students within the College.”
In addition to McGehee, Progress Energy representatives attending the event were Fred N. Day IV, president and CEO of Progress Energy Carolinas; Nancy Temple, vice president of corporate communications; and Scotty Hinnant, senior vice president of nuclear generation and chief nuclear officer. Day serves on the Board of Directors of the NC State Engineering Foundation.
