New Faculty Workshop in College of Engineering at NC State Fosters Teaching Success

The annual New Faculty Workshop for novice professors in the College of Engineering was held August 6 through 10, 2001, at the Engineering Graduate Research Center (EGRC) on NC State’s Centennial Campus.

The four-day seminar, designed to increase teaching effectiveness, is moderated by Dr. Richard M. Felder, Hoechst Celanese Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at NC State, and Dr. Rebecca Brent, adjunct professor of education at East Carolina University and codirector of the faculty development program of National Science Foundation’s Southeastern University and College Coalition for Engineering Education (SUCCEED).  The participants learned about common mistakes made by new faculty members, various student learning styles, defining instructional objectives, how to set up for the first day of class, designing course activities and effective lectures, classroom management, grading methods, designing research proposals and assembling a research team.

Instructors and panel members from the College of Engineering included Dr. Robert F. Davis, Kobe Steel Ltd. Distinguished University Professor of Materials Science and Engineering; Dr. John G. Gilligan, associate dean for research and graduate programs; Dr. Gianluca Lazzi, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering; Dr. Thomas K. Miller, vice provost for distance education and learning technologies; Dr. David Ollis, distinguished professor of chemical engineering; Dr. Sarah A. Rajala, professor of electrical and computer engineering and associate dean of academic affairs; Dr. John Strenkowski, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering; and Dr. Laurie A.
