The College of Engineering at North Carolina State University announces demonstrations of projects completed by NC State summer program participants to be held on the NC State campus the last two weeks of July, 2001.
All program participants are high school students from around the country, either rising juniors or seniors. Students spend a week on the NC State campus engaged in hands-on activities and research in various engineering departments that are offering week-long opportunities. They gain experience in engineering problem-solving techniques, both individually and in teams, and become familiar with the engineering profession, the College of Engineering and the University. The following activities are offered for media coverage:
Thursday, July 26
9:30-11:30 a.m. C.A.R.L. (100 Mann Hall) to demonstrate remote control of robotic construction equipment
2:30 p.m. CFL (Constructed Facilities Laboratory on Centennial Campus) to test and break concrete structures that were made earlier in the week
Friday (July 27 and August 3)
10:30 a.m. 3172 Broughton Hall (Dr. Ramasubramanian’s Mechatronics laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering). Students have fabricated a self-propelled roaming vehicle with an electro-mechanical system and software to operate it. Students will demonstrate and compete with their vehicles.
Thursday (July 26 and August 2)
Any time during the morning or afternoon. Call Edna Deas 515-3858 or go to 232 Riddick Labs upon arrival; she will notify faculty and take students to 15 Riddick Labs to demonstrate team-based testing for fracture analysis of structural materials as part of a research project being conducted for Boeing.
Friday, August 3
10:30 a.m. 346 Daniels Hall. This workshop has been conducted in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Students have learned basic programming and electronics, how to use a microcontroller and circuit construction techniques to build roving vehicles. They will demonstrate their completed vehicles in a final competition on this date.
The public and the media are invited to attend. Members of the media planning to attend may call Kay Leager for directions or more information.
