Dr. George W. Roberts, professor of chemical engineering, received a 2004 George H. Blessis Outstanding Undergraduate Advisor Award at the spring faculty meeting of the College of Engineering at North Carolina State University. The award recognizes faculty members who consistently and willingly give their time and efforts to advising, counseling and mentoring students and assisting student groups.
One of Roberts’ numerous contributions at NC State has been as advisor to the undergraduate student chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), which was named Outstanding Student Chapter in the nation nine times during his 11-year tenure. In 1997 AIChE recognized Roberts as the Outstanding Student Chapter Advisor in the nation. Additionally, he has advised or co-advised more than 40 undergraduates in research during his time at NC State and written a textbook on chemical reaction kinetics and reactor analysis.
Roberts received his doctorate in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1965 and joined the faculty at NC State in 1989. He was elected a fellow of AIChE in 1998, and in 2002 won an Outstanding Teaching Award and gained membership into the Academy of Outstanding Teachers.
The Blessis award is a continuing memorial to George H. Blessis, whose interest in undergraduate education and advising serves as an example to many faculty members. Candidates are nominated by departments and selected by the College of Engineering Teaching and Advising Awards Committee. The awardee receives $1,000 and a certificate. In addition, the recipient’s name is engraved on a permanent plaque displayed in Page Hall, the administrative building for the College of Engineering.
