Dr. J. Michael Rigsbee, professor and head of materials science and engineering at North Carolina State University, has been elected into the membership of the European Academy of Sciences (EAS).  EAS is an international organization made up of distinguished scholars and engineers whose scientific and technological research fosters social and economic development.  According to EAS, “academy membership is considered one of the highest honours attributed to a researcher or engineer.”

Rigsbee joined the College of Engineering at NC State in 1998.  His research interests include atomic-level design of non-equilibrium alloys.  He earned his bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering and his master’s and doctoral degrees in materials engineering from NC State in 1969, 1971 and 1974, respectively.

Prior to coming to NC State, Rigsbee was professor and chairman of materials and mechanical engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.  He is a Fellow of ASM International, a society for materials engineers and scientists.
