Dr. Sarah A. Rajala, professor of electrical and computer engineering and associate dean for research and graduate programs in the College of Engineering at NC State University, has been awarded a 2002 Opening Doors award by the Raleigh and Triangle Chapter of the Business and Professional Women. The award is presented annually to three outstanding professional women in the Triangle who have achieved excellence, contributed to the community and created opportunities for other women in their fields.
The award was presented in a ceremony October 15 in Raleigh. Past NC State University recipients of the award include Dr. Joann M. Burkholder, professor of botany, and Ms. S. Kay Yow, head coach of the NC State women’s basketball team.
Rajala is a member of the steering committee of the Association of Women Faculty, chair of the Women in Engineering Division of the American Society of Engineering Education and on the IEEE Women in Engineering Committee. She was elected to the Academy of Outstanding Electrical Engineers at Michigan Technological University in 1997 and won the Sigma Xi Young Researcher Award in 1987. She is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and senior member of the Society of Women Engineers.
Rajala received her B.S. in electrical engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1974, and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Rice University in 1977 and 1979, respectively.
