Since joining the College of Engineering five years ago, Dr. Lisa Bullard has proven herself to be a valuable member of our teaching faculty. Her career at Eastman Chemical provided a variety of experiences that are beneficial both in the classroom and in her role as mentor. Her teaching style incorporates enthusiasm and a professional air that carries over to her students.
One student writes, “When I first started chemical engineering at NCSU, I was intimidated by the workload and the curriculum’s reputation. Luckily I had Dr. Bullard. Her enthusiasm for teaching the subject material motivated me to keep trying and work hard. Dr. Bullard’s warm and kind character affects the people around her to the point that one cannot help but feel that her load has been lessened and that things are not quite as difficult as they seemed before.”
This is high praise for any person who has faced a classroom of sleepy-eyed students at 8 o’clock in the morning. Her colleagues echo this student’s description. One professor writes, “If you were writing specifications for an undergraduate teacher and adviser, you would probably end up describing Lisa.”
For her love of teaching and her enthusiasm in the classroom, we honor Dr. Lisa Bullard as an Outstanding Teacher.
During her 10 years on the faculty of the College of Engineering, Dr. Hatice Ozturk has inspired her students and challenged them to meet their potential. Her affiliation with Women’s and Gender Studies has enriched the experiences of students both in engineering and in other disciplines.
Dr. Ozturk is admired by all who come to know her as a teacher and as a colleague. Many cited her exceptional skills at organizing and developing appropriate coursework. Her peers hold her in high regard for her ability to teach demanding classes with highly complex material while maintaining a good rapport with her students.
The students reflect this same praise. One student writes that “of all the instructors I have known, none inspire greatness like Dr. Hatice Ozturk.” Another writes that Dr. Ozturk’s devotion to her students combined with her dynamic teaching style are the secret to her success. The student writes, “Dr. Ozturk has an unforgettable influence on her students. She reminds us that our education is very important and she has devoted her talents to see us succeed.”
We honor Dr. Hatice Ozturk as an Outstanding Teacher for her exceptional talent in the classroom and her devotion to her students.
When Dr. Michael Young joined the faculty of the Department of Computer Science five years ago, he swiftly became one of most popular teachers in the department. His conversational teaching style and his energy in the classroom inspire students to explore the subject matter and learn more than just the course requirements.
Dr. Young’s colleagues describe him as a teacher who has “created a classroom atmosphere that is provocative, stimulating, engaging, and, in a very scholarly way, genuinely fun.” He is noted as “a professor who is both a great research scientist as well as a great instructor.”
His students reflect this same opinion. One student writes, “The zest for exploration that I received from Dr. Young stayed with me after that first semester. He gave me direction and wisdom. He inspired me to find out the answers for myself. In a very real way he prepared me for my career today. I hope that more students get a chance to experience what I did and benefit from his guidance.”
For his dedication to teaching and his exceptional talent in the classroom, we honor Dr. Michael Young.
