Dr. Lisa G. Bullard, lecturer and director of undergraduate studies in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, has proven in many ways that she richly deserves the George H. Blessis Outstanding Undergraduate Advisor Award. For the past five years, she has devoted many hours developing ways to improve advising in the department and many more hours advising students.
In her role as director of undergraduate studies, Lisa provides training and support for faculty advisors in her department and advises all of the department's freshmen, transfer students, double majors, and students with unique advising needs.
Since joining the department, Lisa has worked to improve the experience of the undergraduate students. She reorganized the advising system to increase personalized contact between faculty advisors and students.
Lisa is known among the students and faculty as one who will always be available to help students succeed. One student noted, "For chemical engineering students, Dr. Bullard exemplifies what they should strive to become. She possesses the integral characteristics of a chemical engineer. She has a flawless character and is someone whom I personally hold in high esteem and daily try to emulate."
On behalf of the students and faculty of the College of Engineering, I am pleased to present Lisa Bullard with the George H. Blessis Outstanding Undergraduate Advisor Award for 2005.
Dr. Michael Doster, associate professor of nuclear engineering, has earned this award through his dedication to helping the students in the Department of Nuclear Engineering. A member of the NC State faculty for 24 years, Michael believes that advising and mentoring students is an integral part of our educational mission, and his actions reflect that belief.
When Michael advises students, he goes beyond recommending which courses to take during a semester. He goes through the material to help students create a vision of what to expect from the course and how it fits into their degree. His dedication is often remembered by alumni, who attribute much of their success to his advice and assistance.
One student noted that "Dr. Doster is one of those few professors that one encounters in a college career who places students as his number one priority. He is always willing to meet with students and really listen to their questions, whether they are his assigned advisees or not. Dr. Doster truly goes the extra mile to mentor and advise students, both in and out of the classroom."
On behalf of the students and faculty of the College of Engineering, I am pleased to present Michael Doster with the George H. Blessis Outstanding Undergraduate Advisor Award for 2005.
