Dr. Mohammad N. Noori has been appointed the R.J. Reynolds Professor and Head of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at North Carolina State University, effective January 5, 2004. He has served as professor and head of the mechanical and aerospace engineering department at NC State since November 1999.

The appointment, approved last fall by NC State Chancellor Marye Anne Fox, was given in recognition of Noori’s teaching, research and leadership contributions to the department. The appointment and title will remain in effect as long as Noori continues in his role as department head.

The Reynolds family and company have been strong supporters of the College of Engineering at NC State for many years.

Noori also is NC State’s director and liaison professor of the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA), a world-class research and education institute created to conduct cutting-edge aerospace and atmospheric sciences research, develop new technologies for the nation and help inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. The NIA works with NASA’s Langley Research Center to enhance its aerospace and atmospheric research capability.

Noori earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1977, a master’s degree from Oklahoma State University in 1980 and a doctorate in 1984 from the University of Virginia, all in civil engineering. His professional fields of interest include random vibrations, nonlinear systems, stochastic mechanics, structural health monitoring and auto-adaptive systems.
