Two NC State University professors, Dr. John F. Muth, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Dr. Jason M. Haugh, assistant professor of chemical engineering, have been selected as Office of Naval Research (ONR) Young Investigators. The program draws on young scientists and engineers who show “exceptional promise for outstanding research and teaching careers.”
Muth’s research interests include nanoelectronics and photonics, including optical materials and devices, as well as robotics. His ONR award is in the amount of approximately $543,000 over a three-year period. He served as a fast attack submarine officer on the USS Baltimore (SSN-704) and in the US Navy Nuclear Power Program from 1988 to 1993. He received his bachelor’s in applied engineering physics from Cornell University in 1988 and his doctorate in solid state physics from NC State in 1998. In 2002 Muth received a Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Award from Oak Ridge Associated Universities.
Haugh’s research interests include biomedical and biochemical engineering, signal transduction networks and mammalian cell engineering. His award from ONR for the three-year period is approximately $300,000. He joined the NC State faculty in 2000. He received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from NC State in 1994 and his doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1999. In 2002 he received a National Science Foundation Early Career Development Award.
Muth and Haugh were among a group of 26 investigators selected from 220 applicants who submitted research proposals to ONR.
