Two NC State University professors, Dr. John F. Muth, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Dr. Orlin D. Velev, assistant professor of chemical engineering, have been awarded Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Enhancement Awards from Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU). The award includes $5,000 from ORAU for each recipient, which is matched by the recipient’s institution.

The award is designed to facilitate the research and professional growth of young faculty and encourage new funding opportunities for them.

Muth’s research interests include nanoelectronics and photonics, including optical materials and devices, as well as robotics. He received his bachelor’s in applied engineering physics from Cornell University in 1988 and his doctorate in solid state physics from NC State in 1998. He served as a fast attack submarine officer on the USS Baltimore (SSN-704) and in the US Navy Nuclear Power Program from 1988 to 1993.

Velev’s research interests include colloid science and engineering, assembly of nano- and microstructures with photonic, optical and electrical functionality and biosensors. He received his master’s in chemical physics and theoretical chemistry in 1989 and his doctorate in physical chemistry in 1996 from the University of Sofia, Bulgaria. He joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at NC State in August 2001.
