Robert (Robby) Odell Moorefield has been named the Mulkey-Shelton Leadership Scholarship recipient for the 2005-06 academic year.
This prestigious award was established by Barbara H. Mulkey, alumna of the College of Engineering at N.C. State and President and CEO of Mulkey Engineers and Consultants, to honor General Hugh Shelton in promoting the importance of values-based leadership.
The Mulkey-Shelton award brings recognition to a rising senior in the College of Engineering who has demonstrated values-based leadership as exemplified by personal integrity, sense of responsibility, and commitment of service to others. The student receives a monetary reward of $1,000. Each year the winning student’s name will be added to the Mulkey-Shelton Leadership Award Plaque, which resides in the College of Engineering administrative building, Page Hall.
The 2005-06 recipient, Robert Moorefield, is the son of Terry Moorefield and is a senior with a double major in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Textile Chemistry. He grew up in Atlanta, Ga., and attended the Marist School.
Moorefield’s many honors and accomplishments include: Park Scholar – Class of 2006; 2005 Leader of the Pack Scholarship; Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society; Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honor Society); Omega Chi Epsilon (Chemical Engineering Honor Society); Golden Key Honor Society; Order of Omega (Greek Honor Society); National Dean’s List; University Honors Program Undergraduate Research Award; AAA Phi Gamma Delta Scholarship; Order of Thirty and Three; Nominated by the Senior Class President to serve on the Senior Class Council; Sponsored by Youth Venture to found a Grief Support Group; and selected as 1 of 23 undergraduate representatives nationally to assist in government relations efforts in Washington, DC for the North American Inter-Fraternity Conference.
Following graduation in May 2006, Moorefield plans to participate in the Teach for America program for two years, followed by graduate school, where he hopes to study either chemical engineering or organic chemistry.
The Mulkey/General Hugh Shelton Leadership Scholarship is affiliated with the N.C. State University General Hugh Shelton Leadership Initiative, whose mission is “to inspire, educate, and develop values-based leaders committed to personal integrity, professional ethics, and selfless service.” The scholarship is funded by Barbara and Jim Mulkey through the N.C. State Engineering Foundation, Inc. The N.C. State Shelton Leadership Initiative, established in 2001, honors Gen Hugh Shelton, U. S. Army (Ret.), 14th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
