High School Seniors Earn NC State Merit Scholarships

— Five to Major in Engineering or Computer Science

North Carolina State University has announced 10 winners of merit scholarships for the 2002-03 academic year. Merit scholars are chosen on the basis of academic record and potential, as well as involvement in school and community activities. The scholarships are for the 2002-03 freshman year and are renewable.

Listed below are the five Merit Award Winners who plan to major in engineering or computer science.

First Union Foundation Scholarship ($3,500 award, renewable up to 4 years)

HIGH POINT - David Mark McGinley, son of W. Mark and Deborah McGinley. David graduated from Southwest High School, where he was an Advanced Placement Scholar, a National Merit Commended Scholar and an Eagle Scout. McGinley plans to major in computer science and computer engineering at NC State.

University Foundation Scholarship ($2,000 award, renewable up to 4 years)

BAYBORO - Nicholas Eldon Hardison, son of Timothy and June Hardison. Nicholas graduated from Pamlico County High School, where he was a National Beta Scholar and 2002 Class Salutatorian. He also owns and operates a computer-repair business. Hardison plans to major in computer science at NC State.

University Foundation Scholarship ($2,000 award, renewable up to 4 years)

RALEIGH - Paul David Mobley, son of J. David and Peggy Mobley. Paul graduated from Sanderson High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society, Junior Marshal, the American Math Competition school winner, and captain of the cross-country team. Mobley plans to major in mechanical engineering at NC State.

NC State Merit Recognition Scholarships ($2,000 award, renewable up to 4 years)

RALEIGH - Joshua Alexander Duckett, son of G. Scott and Kathy Duckett. Joshua graduated from Millbrook High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and the school swim team, and earned Eagle Scout honors. Duckett plans to major in engineering at NC State.

Joseph D. Moore Scholarships ($1,000 award, renewable up to four years)

GREER (SOUTH CAROLINA) - Jason Scott Giaquinto, son of Joseph and Barbara Giaquinto. Jason graduated from Riverside High School, where he was SAT Team Captain his senior year, served as Rotary Club Honor Student and taught Hebrew at the Temple of Israel. Giaquinto plans to major in chemical engineering and political science at NC State.
